198 / Awkward Truths, AI "Trend-Slop" & A Season for New Starts (+ Take Our 10-Year Survey for a Fun Bonus!)

Happy spring, friends! 🌷

March 20th was the spring equinox — and in our house, it's also Nowruz, the Persian New Year. My husband's family is originally from Iran, and it's one of my favorite holidays: a beautiful excuse to gather people around a table, cook up some Persian food (delish) and welcome in something new. This year it felt heavier than usual, for reasons I don't think I need to spell out. But we celebrated anyway. Sometimes that's the most important thing you can do.

It got me thinking about all the "new year" moments we collect across the calendar — January 1st, Lunar New Year, Nowruz. I've always been a sucker for a fresh start, but this year these moments have felt especially loaded. In 2026, I'm turning 40, celebrating my 10th wedding anniversary and marking a decade since I left my corporate job in New York and made the leap to move abroad and build something of my own.

Ten years is a long time. Long enough to look back and appreciate the distance you've traveled. And a symbolic opportunity to be deliberate about what comes next.

So that's where my head is right now. Spring feels like the right metaphor: not just new growth, but pruning. Cutting back what's no longer working — and, harder still, what's technically working but not quite thriving (or no longer feels like mine to hold). Some ideas are starting to crystallize — including a rebrand and new website in the works! — and I'll be sharing more as those take shape.

But I don't want to do this stocktaking alone. I’m conducting a listening tour of our community, and 5-10 minutes of your honest responses to our new survey would mean a lot.

Plus: Everyone who responds by EOD Monday, March 30th, will be entered into a drawing for a free spot in our Sustainability Communications Reset masterclass, kicking off April 2nd (value: €199).

As always, grateful this little corner of the internet exists and that you're in it. Now get outside and frolic! 🤸‍♀️

😬 How to Dodge the Imminent Net-Zero Mass Failure — Trellis

Soooo… 2030 is going to be awkward. It’s already clear that many companies will miss their decarbonization targets — not from bad faith, but because the systems around them have moved too slowly. Futerra’s Solitaire Townsend puts into words what a lot of sustainability professionals already know but aren't saying and makes an argument for why a messy, fragmented retreat would be the worst possible response. 🎙️ What's Really Happening Right Now in Sustainability Hiring — Engaging ESG Podcast

The corporate sustainability career advice that worked two years ago? It’s probably outdated, say Acre recruiters Catherine Harris and Richard Kent in this interview with Engaging ESG’s Jennifer Owens and Kati Kallins. They share what they're seeing on the ground: longer timelines, shifting role requirements and real talk on resumes and job titles. Oh yeah and AI (obviously). (45 minutes)

🤖 Researchers Asked LLMs for Strategic Advice. They Got "Trendslop" in Return — HBR

Speaking of AI, have you ever noticed that your LLM of choice gives remarkably confident strategic advice? Bad news: a recent study found it's basically regurgitating whatever business buzzwords dominate the internet into what researchers dub “trend-slop”. A useful gut-check for anyone who's ever blindly copy-pasted an AI recommendation into a board deck — some things still require human input, especially in sustainability where nuance can make or break. (8 minutes)

🗂️ 1,105 corporate sustainability reports published in 2025 — Trellis

And then there are cases where AI can be really helpful. Thanks Trellis (and their LLM of choice 😉) for organizing the 2025 sustainability reports published so far into one handy Excel spreadsheet!

👉 LOOKING TO RIGHT-SIZE YOUR REPORTING? Over in Reconsidered’s consultancy practice, we’re deep in sustainability reporting season — but know it’s never too late to start thinking about next year. If you’re with us and your current partner isn’t cutting it, let’s talk. What makes us different: joyful efficiency, real talk over consultant-speak, an unhealthy obsession with the details and lean budgets designed around your needs (not our overhead).

🧠 A New Psychology for Existentially Complex Times — Becoming Guides on Substack

If you've ever felt like your job is convincing people to care, this one's for you. Environmental psychologist Dr. Renée Lertzman argues that the assumption of apathy — baked into so much of our approach to sustainability communications and advocacy — is not only wrong, it's actively sending us in the wrong direction. People aren't indifferent, she says; they're stuck. Her Three A's framework attempts to reframe what it takes to move people. (10 minutes)

Hey there change agents, I’ve noticed that greenwashing headlines have started to feel a little predictable. Company makes a big environmental claim, someone calls it out, reputation takes a hit. So when a case lands that's a bit more nuanced than that, it’s worth calling out. Last year, Apple was sued over its "carbon neutral" Apple Watch marketing by buyers who believed the carbon credits behind the claim didn't add up. Last month, a U.S. district judge dismissed the case, finding Apple had...

Hey there change agents 👋 A few weeks ago, my social media feeds turned into a 2016 time capsule. Somewhere between the throwback photos and thoughtful reflections, I started thinking about how much has shifted over the past decade — for me personally, but also for the practice of sustainable business. That curiosity turned into one of our most engaged Change Hub dialogues yet. Last week, we took it back to Tensie Whelan and Carly Fink's The Comprehensive Business Case for Sustainability — a...

Hey there change agents 👋 Though I’m not a big football fan, I’m always curious to have a scroll through the latest Super Bowl ads. Because they’re never *just* ads; they’re a cultural snapshot, a barometer of what brands think is resonant and worth amplifying right now. Just a few years ago, the list was full of courageous, thought-provoking spots positioning brands around the social and environmental causes of our time: equality, climate, LGBTQ+ issues. Yeah, they were still ads. But they...
