207 / Elmo, Emotions & An Initial Post-Climate Week Dispatch From My Boarding Gate
Published about 12 hours ago • 4 min read
ISSUE 207
Helloooooo from JFK Terminal 4! I'm sitting at my gate, exhausted and overstimulated in the best possible way.
You guessed it - Climate Week NYC.
I have endless notes to review, people to follow up with and experiences to process - and there’s no way this tender little brain’s in any kind of state to serve up coherent insights in time for this week’s newsletter.
What I can share is that I came into this year’s Climate Week hungry for new ideas, inspiration and energy. And boy did it deliver - but not in the places or spaces I imagined.
I shared a bit on LinkedIn here and here, but a deeper, hopefully more coherent reflection will come in the next issue.
To all my fellow travelers (and those tired just from following the hubbub online) - rest up this weekend! We've got work to do.
Thanks for the F*ck Doom merch, Solutions House - y'all were great.
What's On In Our World
I’m buzzing from the breakfast conversation I hosted yesterday morning with a stellar group of fellow humans navigating the shifting world of sustainability strategy and communications. So much wisdom, so much insight, so many laughs! Thank you to our generous hosts Closed Loop Partners and our guests from organizations like J.Crew Group, Kenvue, PVH, Credo Beauty, Reformation, Another Tomorrow, Autodesk Foundation, Ultrafabrics and Pledge 1% for joining in.
We only take on a few impact reporting clients per season, and we're nearing our limit. If you're looking to breathe fresh energy into your reporting process - and do it in a joyfully efficient, budget-friendly way - reach out!

Alison Taylor’s new Substack series on the changing nature of the sustainability profession perfectly captures so many of the sentiments I heard from in-house friends this week. Following a soul-stirring first installment on the grief and pragmatism that's required to work in this space, this second article interrogates the “party line” that was shared on stages across NYC this week: “Yes, the terminology has changed, political pressures are real, but under the hood, the work continues.” But does it? The reality, Alison argues, is much more complex. (16 minutes)
Elmo was one of the hottest tickets in town this Climate Week - which either means the climate conversation is getting brilliantly more creative or things in our space have gotten really, truly weird. Both/and, baby!!! The furry guy popped up at a sold-out Solutions House panel exploring the impact of extreme heat on children, with the conversation highlighting Sesame Workshop’s recent Storm on Sesame Street special featuring Post Malone. (3 minutes)
What is an April article doing in my Climate Week roundup? At a separate Solutions House panel, Futerra founder (and new novelist) Solitaire Townsend, author Jo Piazza and Grist’s Tory Stephens explored the power of fiction and worldbuilding in driving climate action. The conversation about writing was fascinating, but the moment that caught the room’s attention was when Jo teasingly suggested turning Soli’s new book Godstorm into a video game. You could hear the collective gasp around the potential of this participatory medium, so I had to do more research into what’s happening in this space. There’s momentum here and there - but imagine what’d be possible with more? (9 minutes)
Say the word “climate” and feelings of stress, urgency and overwhelm rise to the surface. But “nature”? Connection, awe, calm. This is just one insight from new research around the question: why are so many young people who care the most also the least likely to act? This "Gen Z dilemma" feels as present for my peers as it does for those starting out, and this analysis (anchored in a meaningful personal story from BBMG founder Raphael Bemporad) proposes a few answers… or at the very least, first steps on a path out of overwhelm. (10 minutes)
There’s a lot of networking happening during Climate Week. But connecting - really connecting? Much harder to come by. I was fortunate to be included in an intimate pre-Climate Week gathering co-hosted by Susan, known across the social impact space as a serial connector, and witness her approach to holding space firsthand. Her book, published in 2021, shares her “gather-ask-do” method for building meaningful relationships and is worth a read (or reread) before next Climate Week rolls around.

ISSUE 206 Hello friends, I'm sitting with some real dissonance this week. On one hand: the UN Environment Programme published a report officially throwing in the towel on a 1.5°C pathway. Plenty of us have been operating on this assumption for a while now, but seeing it acknowledged in an official document by the institution that negotiated the target felt... momentous. On the other: a flurry of invitations, announcements and excited email and WhatsApp exchanges as our sector gears up for...
ISSUE 205 Hello there friends! Happy to be back in your inbox after our family summer mini-sabbatical. I’m now back in Amsterdam, writing to you from my perch above the canals. I’ve noticed that there's something about stepping away for a while that really clears the fog. You come back and things are suddenly obvious: what matters, what doesn't and what's been quietly taking up space for no good reason. Another version of this happened at Reconsidered earlier this year. We rebranded, closed a...
ISSUE 204 Hello from Bali 👋 I’m midway through our family summer “mini-sabbatical” — six weeks of travel and time off my laptop that I’ve been anticipating (and working toward) all year. After a few weeks with my in-laws in California, an unplanned detour to Manila to be with family and an extended layover in Tokyo where we experienced a kokushobi (see 5 Links) first-hand, I’m back in a place that I’ve returned to again and again during different periods of transition. The gap year-and-a-half...
