176 / Louises, Lawsuits & 500 Companies Showing That Green And Growth Can Coexist
Published 7 months ago • 5 min read
Hey there change agents 👋
This December in the Change Hubwe’re focusing on all things Reflection — because when working in sustainable business, we can spend so much time focusing on what’s ahead that we forget to look back on how far we’ve come (and capture what we’ve learned along the way).
I have a few of my own favorite tools and frameworks for year-end reflection (the annual guide in my husband’s AI-powered journaling app topping the list 🙌).
But I’m always curious to peek into others’ reflection practices to see what I might learn and incorporate into my own. We’ve started a thread in the LinkedIn Group and invite you to share your recommendations; we’ll then pull these together and share a final list with you all before the holidays.
We’re building our annual 2025 Sustainable Business Events & Conferences Calendar and want to know: what are the must-attend sustainability gatherings on your list 🗓? Let us know via the LinkedIn thread linked below and we'll add them to the cal.
In line with this month's Hot Topic of Reflection, we're hosting a joyful year-end celebration for our members to come together and look back on all we’ve made happen 🎉, sharing curated resources on impact-relevant reflection frameworks ✏️, connecting members 1:1 through our quarterly Member Matchmaking service 👯 and more. If you’re looking for a space to process this past year with a community of sustainable business peers, now's the time to join.
Can growth and green coexist? This new global ranking by TIME and Statista surfaces 500 companies whose strong financial growth and environmental performance demonstrate “yes”. Notably absent are the corporates you’re used to seeing on other best-for-the-world round-ups. Rather, mid-size companies dominate the list, serving as valuable proof points that “businesses of any size and from almost any industry can see big growth while embracing sustainability.”
Last week, Walmart announced a big scale-back of its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) program, pulling back on commitments like prioritizing women- and minority-owned suppliers, discontinuing its racial equity center and stepping away from LGBTQ+ inclusion efforts like the Human Rights Campaign’s workplace index. With this move, Walmart joins a slew of other companies who have dialed back their (public-facing) efforts as legal and governmental challenges to DEI programs continue to ramp up. Grr. (6 minutes)
In a rare move, Ben & Jerry’s is suing its parent company Unilever over interference with its social mission — a cornerstone of the brand’s identity. The ice cream maker says Unilever blocked its efforts to advocate for Palestinian refugees, testing how far a mission-founded company can go to protect its values under corporate ownership. Why was COP29 nicknamed the "finance COP"? Get caught up on the “NCQG” — aka the New Collective Quantified Goal on climate finance — with this comic from The Weird and Wild, which breaks down the big debates, decisions and what it all means in gloriously retro internet style. (5 minutes; 🙏 Stephanie K. for sharing)
👉 TAKE ACTION: While we’re talking climate finance, can we all just agree that we should be taxing billionaires like everyone else? Sign 350.org’s “Tax Their Billions” petition if you’re on board.
In this duo of short films, we meet Louise and get a glimpse of her life in two very different versions of 2050. One of the most powerful examples of climate storytelling I’ve seen in recent years — and a strong reminder that the story of so many Louises is being written now. (6 minutes; 🙏 Elena C. for sharing)

Hello friends, How strange it is to read a eulogy for the business approach that’s shaped your entire working life. That’s how I felt reading “How ‘Business for Good’ Went Bad—And What Comes Next”, the Fast Company cover story making the rounds on LinkedIn (shared in this issue’s 5 Links below). It hit hard. Not because it said anything wildly new, but because of how starkly it named what so many of us in this field have been feeling: that the vision we’ve spent years building — of business...
Hey there friends, Since I returned from maternity leave earlier this spring, ideas for Reconsidered have been flying at me left and right. I’m feeling energized by all the potential and possibility — but also wary of overcommitting and spreading our team too thin. That’s where you come in! Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning (that’s eight years, y’all 🤩) or have just joined, I’d love to hear your perspective. We’ve put together a short survey to better understand who’s in our...
Hey there change agents, Recently, we asked our LinkedIn community how they're using AI in their sustainable business work. The most common answer? Folks are just getting started. Unsurprising, really. AI can feel intimidating, like it belongs in the tech team’s corner. But I’m intrigued by its potential — not just for solving massive sustainability challenges but also for freeing up the day-to-day frictions that hold us back from delivering our best work. It’s becoming increasingly clear...
