190 / Plot Twists, Podcasts & *That* Patagonia Impact Report (+ Our New Offering for Independent Consultants!)
Published about 1 month ago • 5 min read
Hello friends,
Next month marks nine years since I took the plunge into independent consulting — a leap that was equal parts exhilarating, terrifying and necessary. Lately, I’m noticing more and more people standing exactly where I once stood — some by choice, some by circumstance and many navigating that messy, complicated in-between.
No matter how you got here, the questions tend to be the same: How do I stand out in a crowded space? How do I talk about what I do in a way that feels true to me and isn’t too sales-y? How do I build a business that allows me to make the impact I want to make — without burning out?
These are the questions I’ve spent nearly a decade helping corporate clients answer. And now, I’m curious about exploring them at the individual level, too.
So we’re cooking up something new at Reconsidered. A group experience designed to support independent sustainability professionals with clarifying your niche, articulating your value, leveling up your thought leadership and building a business that feels aligned with who you are and who you are becoming — with the support and community I wish I had nine years ago.
And because this offering is for you, we want to build it with you. I’m collecting input on what would make this type of experience most useful, energizing and supportive. Your challenges, your questions, your “I wish someone would just teach me ____” moments — all of it will help shape what we create.
For November in the Change Hub, we’re focusing on a Hot Topic that’s riiiight up our alley: Community Building. We recently hosted a “Let’s Talk” session on Non-Icky Networking and a “How I Built A Local Sustainability Network” Learning Lab with Lisa Hendrickson, co-founder of Austin Sustainability Professionals. Next up: an “Anti-Speed Networking” meet-up, our Member Matchmaking service for 1:1 connections, weekly community building challenges and member-hosted IRL meet-ups around the world. And did we mention our new, more accessible pricing model?
Yesterday we hosted the first session of The Sustainability Communications Reset with 30 participants from around the world and it was a blast. Our new live, three-part, virtual masterclass series helps you navigate the sustainability communications landscape so you can communicate with confidence in 2026 — and our January cohort is still accepting applications 🙌.
COP30 is in full swing and my favorite way to stay up-to-speed is this special podcast series from former UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres and her Outrage + Optimism co-hosts Tom Rivett-Carnac and Paul Dickinson. Their daily episodes take you straight to Belém — without the humidity — with insider takes on the wins, setbacks and behind-the-scenes drama of this year’s “implementation COP”.
Hot off the press: yesterday, the EU Parliament approved sweeping cuts to CSRD and CSDDD, raising thresholds so high that most companies will now fall out of scope — and scrapping the requirement for climate transition plans altogether. The vote only passed after the center-right teamed up with farther-right parties, prompting sharp criticism from sustainable investment groups who warn this “guts the impact” of the EU’s flagship laws. “What we’re witnessing isn’t just a watering down of ambition,” said one observer, “but a public alliance of political forces fundamentally opposed to sustainability itself.” For more context, see Parliament’s official release, Politico’s political read on the vote and the BHRRC Omnibus tracker for a helpful timeline of the events that got us here. Patagonia just released its first (yes, first) comprehensive environmental and social impact report, and the sustainability world has thoughts. Trellis’ Heather Clancy praised the transparency but didn’t shy away from the hard truths (emissions up 2% last year, 1% of returned products actually recyclable) while b-school professor Ken Pucker took to LinkedIn to applaud the apparel company’s “impressive” progress. Together, the reactions paint a picture that feels kind of perfectly Patagonia: ambitious, imperfect and still setting a bar most companies won’t even touch.
TIME just unveiled its latest roundup of the 100 most influential leaders driving business climate action. It’s a mix of the usual heavy hitters (Lula, Gavin Newsom, Christine Lagarde) along with a few delightful curveballs (hi, Samuel L. Jackson, the Grey’s Anatomy showrunner and Pope Leo!). Editors say they prioritized real, recent impact over lofty pledges, highlighting leaders actually moving the conversation forward.
Just a little reminder to bookmark for the days when everything feels hard. (1 min, 🙏 Paulette for sharing)

Hey there change agents 👋 Hard to believe this is our last newsletter of 2025! While I was pulling together our annual “Favorite Sustainable Business Links of 2025” list (below) I found myself reflecting on the energy and momentum this year has brought, in a time when not all momentum in the wider world has felt so positive. Baby Isabel arrived in January, bringing a burst of joy that set the tone for everything that followed. Stepping back into work was its own adventure with two little ones...
Hey there change agents 👋 If there were ever a week for appreciation posts, it’s this one — so here’s mine for sustainable business, a field that never stops surprising, stretching and inspiring me. Here are a few things I’m especially grateful for this year 👇 The slow but steady progress hiding behind every “ESG is dead” headline. The people who still believe business can be a force for good — and are acting toward it. The courage it takes to say, “We don’t know yet, but we’re working on...
